TheLEK.Com Makes Online Dating a Local Affair

August 18, 2008

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 18 /PRNewswire/ — TheLEK.com, a dating site that matches users based on their favorite restaurants, bars, clubs, events and activities, today announced the launch of their new community for Los Angeles singles.

TheLEK.com combines the best features of a personals site with a comprehensive, user-generated city guide. Members, aka Lekkers, list and review their favorite spots in Los Angeles and can easily find other locals with similar tastes and interests by browsing restaurant, bar, event and profile pages. Co-founder, Chandos Erwin explains, “Rather than requiring members to fill in ‘About Me’ boxes or take complex surveys, Lekkers are defined by the things they like to do and the places they like to go.”

“Profiles on TheLEK.com end up being a natural compatibility test. When you meet someone who already shares similar interests, you are a guaranteed a certain amount of chemistry,” co-founder, David Kurtz continues. “Plus it solves the eternal first date quandary, ‘Where should we go?’”

Called by some “The iTunes of Dating”, TheLEK.com eschews monthly subscriptions and instead utilizes a one-time fee of $0.99 for a member to anonymously initiate contact with another member. “If you like someone, you pay 99 cents and say ‘hello,’” says co-founder, Chandler Evans. “Simple. Easy. And qualified, because it makes you think about who you’re talking to and why. We like that. We want ‘hellos’ to be meaningful. Not just hook-up spam.”

TheLEK.com takes the stigma out of online dating by letting members invite friends to join their “Tribe.” Tribe members can easily let each other know what events and activities they are attending, post comments about each other and exchange messages without any charge.

TheLEK.com has formed partnerships with a roster of top Los Angeles organizations including BarCopa, Border Grill, Cafe Ugo, Ciudad, Father’s Office, Flake, Heal the Bay, LAXart, The Room, The Roxy Theater and Ugo Wine Bar to promote their events and activities on the site. Megan Jacobs, of The Roxy Theater says, “The Lek is a great community of fun, hip, activity oriented people. For a booker like me, having their support is tremendously helpful in regards to promoting my events.”

On Wednesday, August 20, TheLEK.com will launch a series of exclusive events, with the inaugural “Wine and Lekking” at Ugo Wine Bar (formerly Vinum Populi) in Culver City, CA. The events are designed to bring members together for activities ranging from group surfing lessons to wine tastings. At “Wine and Lekking,” guests will mingle with other site members while enjoying Ugo’s selection of more than 48 wines. The series continues with events scheduled in September and October at Ronin Izakaya, Flake, LA >

For a limited time, TheLEK.com is granting new members “Founding Lekker” status. Founding Lekkers never have to pay a fee to contact other members for the lifetime of their membership.
