Kuwait company signs deal with Nokia on new technology support
KUWAIT CITY, May 29 (Xinhua) -- Wataniya Telecom, Kuwait's second largest telecommunications company, signed Sunday with Nokia a 125- million-dollar deal on new technology support, the Kuwait News Agency reported.
The agreement was inked by Wataniya CEO Harri Koponen and Nokia's vice president on networks Walid Moneimne.
Under the agreement, Nokia will supply the Kuwaiti company with core network technology that opens the way to the so-called "beyond 3G" mobile technologies.
Moneimne said Nokia's network will support the "beyond 3G" HSPA (High Speed Packet Access) technology, which is able to provide broadband Internet access at speed up to 2 Megabits per second in the first phase.
Koponen, on his part, said the company planned to use Nokia's advanced technologies to develop a new category of services to draw customers.
Wataniya's new network with Nokia's help is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
Wataniya Telecom was launched in 1999 as Kuwait's second mobile phone company. It operates in Kuwait, Iraq, Tunisia and Algeria, serving over two million customers.
