India-based Reliance Communications plans to introduce internet protocol television service in the country by the end of 2008, revealed media reports, citing the Indo-Asian News Service as their source.
Utilizing the internet protocol technology, the service is reported to allow operators to deliver media content over telephone lines.
Reliance Communications announced a $500 million licensing agreement with Microsoft in November 2007 to use the latter's software for internet protocol television (IPTV) services.
The IPTV technology will enable voice over internet telephony, video-on-demand and digital video recording services.
"With customers demanding personalized entertainment, IPTV service would allow subscribers more choice and control. We will launch this service within this year," Mahesh Prasad, president of Reliance Communications, was quoted as saying.
