Lucent Technologies to Build Optical Networks for Guangdong Telecom

Posted on: Wednesday, 1 June 2005, 09:00 CDT

LambdaUnite(R) MSS Deployed for the First Time in Cities of Zhongshan and Zhuhai

Lucent Technologies (NYSE:LU) today announced two new optical networking contracts with Zhongshan Telecom and Zhuhai Telecom, two local branch companies of Guangdong Telecom, a provincial subsidiary of China Telecom. Lucent will supply a range of optical equipment that will allow the two companies to cost-effectively optimize their existing network architectures, while expanding capacity to meet the increasing needs of emerging data services.

According to the terms of the contracts, Lucent will supply its industry-leading LambdaUnite(R) Multi-Service Switch (MSS) and the Metropolis(R) ADM MultiService Mux for Guangdong Telecom's networks in Zhongshan and Zhuhai. This marks the first deployment of the LambdaUnite(R) MSS in the two cities and the first deployment of the Metropolis(R) ADM in Zhuhai Telecom. Zhongshan and Zhuhai are major markets of Guangdong Telecom located in the Pearl River Delta, a well-developed region in South China.

"We are pleased to work with Zhongshan Telecom and Zhuhai Telecom, and to offer the advantages of Lucent LambdaUnite(R) MSS Multi-Service Switch to our Chinese customers." said Louis Tong, Executive Vice President, Marketing and Sales, Lucent Technologies China." Backed by Bell Labs innovation in optical networking, we can offer the cutting-edge optical solutions and services to meet our customers' needs both today and tomorrow."

With the LambdaUnite(R) MSS and Metropolis(R) ADM, Zhuhai Telecom will build an integrated multi-service transport platform that supports both traditional voice services and new data services including Ethernet. Zhongshan Telecom will leverage the LambdaUnite(R) MSS to optimize its existing network for improved flexibility in circuit provisioning and management.

Developed by Bell Labs, the LambdaUnite(R) MSS is a next-generation optical transport system and switch that bridges traffic between data-intensive metro networks and high-speed optical core networks, connecting cities, campuses and corporate networks to larger, long-haul public networks. It enables service providers to seamlessly upgrade their networks and allows them to deliver new value-added services such as Gigabit Ethernet. Mesh restoration capabilities were also added to help service providers migrate to new mesh-based networks, while at the same time, leveraging traditional restoration architectures. Lucent has shipped more than 100 LambdaUnite(R) Multi-Service Switches in China, and in the past two years, the customer list in China has been extended to include all major service providers, reaffirming Lucent's leadership in the optical switch market.

The Metropolis(R) ADM MultiService Mux is part of the Lucent Metropolis(R) family of metro optical solutions designed to eliminate bottlenecks in existing metro networks. It is an integrated Ethernet over SDH metro access multiplexer, which enables service providers to migrate seamlessly from existing networks to data-aware packet networks. Adding data services to optical networks increases revenue potential for customers and helps them offer a wide variety of new Ethernet services. Metropolis (R) ADM integrates seamlessly into carriers' existing infrastructure, avoiding the need for an overlay network built for new services. Its low power consumption and small footprint helps carriers save on operating expenses.
