Sycamore Networks Introduces Ethernet Packet Intelligence on Universal Service Card
Posted on: Thursday, 2 June 2005, 09:00 CDT
Sycamore Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: SCMR), a leader in optical networking, today announced the addition of Ethernet Packet Intelligence to its Universal Service Card (USC), a modular service interface card for the SN 16000 intelligent optical switch. The company also announced it has added advanced Ethernet service creation and performance management tools to its SILVX(R) Network Management System.
The addition of Ethernet Packet Intelligence to the USC provides a logical and efficient connection between the optical domain (layer 1) and the Ethernet service layer (layer 2) that extends and augments the Company's intelligent Ethernet-over-SONET/SDH solutions. Using industry-standard classification schemes to identify flows on an interface, Ethernet Packet Intelligence on the USC efficiently maps flows from Gigabit Ethernet and 10 Gigabit Ethernet interfaces to specific Virtual Concatenation Groups (VCGs), in support of E-LINE and E-LAN services. The classifications are also used to support intelligent, per flow policing schemes, in support of Service Level Agreement enforcement. These enhancements leverage the advantages of Ethernet-over-SONET/SDH transport that are provided by ITU-T standards, including Virtual Concatenation (VCAT), Generic Framing Procedure (GFP), and Link Capacity Adjustment Scheme (LCAS).
"Intelligent packet-to-circuit mapping capabilities expand on the data networking principles Sycamore first introduced to optical networking," said Kevin Oye, vice president of systems and technology at Sycamore. "These enhanced features will enable our customers to rapidly deploy flexible-rate Ethernet services with tiered service levels. Combining the simplicity and ubiquity of Ethernet services with Sycamore's intelligent optical switching creates a foundation for network operators to quickly offer versatile Ethernet and high-bandwidth services more efficiently and cost-effectively across the optical network."
The Company also announced the addition of new features to its SILVX NMS that enhance and extend Ethernet service creation and management based on flows for Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) labels and Virtual LAN (VLAN) tags. The ability to classify and police packets based on layer 2 criteria improves efficiency and enables the creation of secure, resilient, and highly manageable Ethernet services.
The SILVX family of management software includes network-level SilvxManager(R), node-level SilvxSource(R), and the SILVX InSight(TM) suite of network design tools. Together, these fully integrated applications enable service providers to efficiently and cost-effectively manage and plan every aspect of their intelligent optical network, from the initial planning phase to ongoing service management and network optimization.
Sycamore's Universal Service Card redefines flexible, cost-effective optical networking by enabling a variety of interface types, port speeds, and transport options in a single line card. The USC's modular architecture can support SONET/SDH, Gigabit Ethernet, and 10 Gigabit Ethernet interfaces.
At SUPERCOMM 2005, Sycamore Networks (booth #64066) will showcase its portfolio of intelligent optical switches and network management solutions.
