Napera Networks Partners With GlobalSign to Integrate Proven SSL Certificate Technology With Its Network Access Control Products

August 26, 2008

Napera Networks (www.napera.com) and GlobalSign (www.globalsign.com)are partnering to integrate GlobalSign’s proven certificate technology in Napera’s network access control solutions designed for the small and medium enterprise, the companies today announced. Napera is the first networking vendor to utilize GlobalSign’s latest certificate platform, providing leading-edge technology to its customers and enabling a faster go-to-market schedule.

The partnership also marks a ground-breaking move in the network security industry by Napera. This is the first time a company is utilizing a valid server certificate for networking gear managed via HTTPS (HyperText Transport Protocol Secure used for accessing a secure Web server). Napera’s network access control solution includes an appliance and a Web-based management service, MyNapera.com, for real-time logging, reporting and alerts. The GlobalSign server certificates in the Napera solution are used for both Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) and 802.1X authentication.

“Napera has been an incredible partner to work with, as the company achieves a fast innovation cycle thanks to its experienced team of engineers and its ability to leverage best-of-breed proven technologies like GlobalSign’s,” said Johan Sys, president, GlobalSign. “We are pleased that Napera has chosen GlobalSign, the only pure play and most experienced SSL provider in the world.”

The GlobalSign technology provides Napera customers a higher level of security and confidence, as GlobalSign is a trusted Certificate Authority and SSL or 802.1x certificates are more secure and easier to manage than self-signed certificates. In fact, most next-generation Web browsers no longer accept self-signed certificates because of the security issues.

“There is a huge problem in the networking industry today where administrators and users have been conditioned to always click on ‘allow self-signed certificate,’ ignoring the potential security threats,” said Chris Boscolo, CTO, Napera Networks. “Rather than using self-signed certificates or other insecure methods, Napera chose to use proven technology from GlobalSign that utilizes the SSL protocol for ultimate security and reliability.”

Many industry experts have warned that it is impossible to differentiate between a self-signed certificate and a “man in the middle” (MTIM) attack, which enables a hacker to intercept messages or information. Most cryptographic protocols, such as SSL, include a server authentication specifically to prevent MITM attacks by using a trusted certification authority.

The main benefits Napera provides through integrating the GlobalSign certificate in the Napera solution include:

-- Out-of-the-box functionality, with no additional configuration or set- up required -- No agent on the user's computer -- Seamless security for the end user -- End to end encryption -- Security provided by a proven Certificate Authority

Napera recently launched its first product, the Napera N24, a network access control solution that includes a switch-based appliance and integrated online management service. The Napera N24 combines device health, identity enforcement, and guest access in a single easy-to-use and manage solution. Napera’s line of integrated products and Web services enable companies to deploy wireless networking, guest access, and worker mobility programs while keeping the corporate network safe and secure.
