EdgeCast and Mashable Partner to Accelerate Social Media News and Information

EdgeCast Networks, the superior, cost-effective rich media content delivery network (CDN), today announced that Mashable, the number one social networking and social media news site, is using the EdgeCast content delivery network to accelerate delivery of its site content around the world.
"Mashable has rapidly become the go-to site for social media news from around the world, and quickly established a leadership position in the social media sphere," said James Segil, president of EdgeCast Networks. "That position of popularity has put pressure on their infrastructure, and we're pleased they decided to turn to us to alleviate that pressure and ensure their site content is reliably delivered."
As Mashable viewership was growing and spreading around the world, they needed their site to load more quickly. By staging their content on the EdgeCast global content delivery network, Mashable was able to maintain better than 99.99% availability while reducing site load by more than 50%. Each of Mashable's web pages are generally "heavy," which means they contain a large number of components that need to be loaded dynamically with each page request. This places a significant burden on Mashable's primary web servers, especially when a blog post becomes hot news and is suddenly linked to from all over the web. This posed a significant challenge for accelerating the delivery of each page and ensuring every element was loaded quickly every time, regardless of the end user's location. With millions of readers coming to Mashable's site to get the latest daily dose of news on the blogosphere, the bar was set high and Mashable's brand depends on their site being up and loading fast.
"The richness of our site pages presented a considerable challenge for effective content acceleration, especially as we are growing so quickly," said Christopher Peri, CTO of Mashable. "We needed to offload the content to a content delivery network that could not only improve our performance but also enable nearly unlimited growth. The performance gains we have seen with EdgeCast show that we made an excellent decision. We also wanted a CDN that was responsive and engaged, and the customer service from the EdgeCast team has been amazing."
EdgeCast has built a global content delivery network designed for today's rich media Internet. Engineered with high-performance speed and a highly scalable, globally load balanced architecture that supports massive audiences and flash crowds, the EdgeCast network outperforms rivals by significant margins. Customers are experiencing dramatic performance improvements and substantial cost savings when switching from competitors such as Limelight Networks, Akamai and Vitalstream/Internap.
