German railway operator Deutsche Bahn has signed a study agreement to design a blueprint for a rail network in Qatar, according to Reuters.
Qatar's sovereign wealth fund, Qatari Diar Real Estate Investment, has stated that the project partners will seek to design an integrated railway network to span both national and regional centers. Deutsche Bahn is expected to initiate technical and financial assessment of the proposed project.
The news source said that Qatar is seeking to build a high-speed rail network between Doha and Bahrain as part of a pan-Gulf rail network. Qatar is also planning nationwide freight and passenger services, and a metro rail network in Doha to address increasing congestion.
The Gulf Cooperation Council is working on a feasibility study with the World Bank to build a $2.5 billion pan-Gulf rail network. Gulf cities including Abu Dhabi, Kuwait, Riyadh and Mecca are reportedly planning rail systems. Dubai is expected to complete the first phase of its $4.4 billion metro project in September 2009.
Deutsche Bahn is expected to raise at least $7.4 billion in its initial public offering and is attracting interest from Middle East-based investors.
