Sunrise Telecom(R) Incorporated STT xWDM First Integrated Test Solution to Use Tunable Lasers for Flexible, Interactive Network Testing

SAN JOSE, Calif., June 6 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Building on its commitment to speed its customers' deployment of voice, video, data services and next-generation digital multi-media services, Sunrise Telecom(R) Incorporated , today introduced the STT xWDM module for its Scalable Test Toolkit (STT), the first tool to incorporate a tunable laser to interactively test up to 96 channels with a single instrument. This second generation product, with wider wavelength spectrum analysis range and increased OSNR range, is designed from the ground up specifically to test wavelength multiplexed networks that increasingly dominate interoffice transport. The STT xWDM goes beyond network monitoring allowing service technicians to test individual channels using signal drop and insert techniques on live lines. As a result, service providers can assess and maintain the health of their networks without disrupting service using a single, compact, and low-cost instrument.
"As new technologies continue to permeate the communications infrastructure, technicians have had to adapt outdated test equipment for 'quick fix' solutions," said, Ildefonso Polo, director of product marketing for Sunrise Telecom. "The new STT xWDM uses advanced tunable laser technology to deliver the most comprehensive and precise optical test capabilities required by field technicians, while eliminating the features found in traditional solutions that may be applicable for lab use, but that can impede field applications."
The STT xWDM's tunable laser source with wavelength conversion capabilities and tunable filters for wavelength drop with low insertion loss, for the first time gives technicians the ability to select, monitor and interactively test wavelength accuracy, power level, and optical signal to noise ratio for the O, E, S, C, and L bands, covering the range between 1260 to 1640 nm with a single instrument. The inherent flexibility of the xWDM aids technicians in determining the overall health of the network without interference, identifying functions outside normal parameters, and troubleshooting potential problems before they disrupt customer service.
In test situations, the tunable wavelength drop can select and drop a specific WDM wavelength within the C or L bands. Its extremely low insertion loss combines with STT NAM's high sensitivity SONET/SDH receivers to provide a wide dynamic range for monitoring applications. The tunable wavelength converter takes any signal, up to 10.7 Gbps, within 1527 to 1607 nm range and converts it to an ITU-T grid signal within the C or L bands for testing and troubleshooting or to extend the reach of a signal. With no moving parts, the integrated dual port OSA for DWDM and CWDM analysis is less sensitive to vibration and shocks common to field test environments, making it one of the most robust solutions available today.
Complementing Sunrise Telecom's STT SONET, SDH, Ethernet and fiber optic test modules, the STT xWDM provides comprehensive testing in a highly reliable, compact solution ideal for rugged field environments. Its advanced software allows each component of the STT xWDM -- optical spectrum analyzer (OSA), tunable wavelength converter, and wavelength drop -- to share wavelength data, creating an intuitive and simple-to-use interface. The STT xWDM module is fully compatible with Sunrise Telecom's STT NAM, STT Ethernet test modules. This allows test technicians to perform any BERT, Ethernet, or protocol analysis up to 10.7 Gbit/s in a single, compact test setup.
Its unique design allows the STT xWDM to operate bundled with other STT modules and controlled by a single STT controller, or to operate fully as a stand-alone unit. In addition, the STT xWDM can be installed on the customer's site for remote testing and monitoring through any LAN or WAN using an IP address.
