"iSCSI will initially open the door to more affordable and needed storage solutions for SMB and mid-market customers," commented Robert Gray, Research Vice-President of Storage Systems with IDC., "D-Link's new intelligent xStor network storage controller products are targeted to fulfill these needs. The company, with a strong SMB channel, experience in Ethernet networking, and value-based approach is well positioned to capitalize on the growth of iSCSI and win SMB market share."
"The introduction of the D-Link xStack Storage product line represents the achievement of another milestone in our advanced technology initiative for 2005," said Steven Joe, president and CEO of D-Link. "Internet-based Storage Area Networks are a natural extension of the Ethernet and networking expertise that D-Link brings to the table with our core competency, so Information Technology managers and users can embrace this next generation technology with confidence."
The D-Link xStack Storage product family of iSCSI SAN solutions are designed to address the growing high performance storage requirements brought about by the need for better application and database performance, infrastructure consolidation, and robust backup and disaster recovery solutions. D-Link now aggressively addresses these storage requirements at the SMB level by leveraging existing iSCSI and Ethernet technologies and lowering the total cost of ownership for storage area networking solutions over more complex legacy Fibre Channel and slower Network Attached Storage (NAS) solutions. By utilizing existing Ethernet technology, the costs associated with separate host bus adapters and expensive Fibre Channel switches are eliminated and the per gigabyte cost for storage is significantly reduced.
The xStack Storage family of high performance storage products are built on a next generation system-on-a-chip (SoC) architecture which provides 10 Gbps iSCSI, TCP and IP offload, and embedded processors running a fully featured, integrated storage-virtualization firmware stack on a single ASIC. With the tightly integrated network and storage system approach, the xStack Storage architecture is capable of delivering up to an estimated 860 megabytes per second with operational performance of over 65,000 cached I/O operations per second, an impressive and significant improvement. The xStack Storage platforms will support removable serial ATA (SATA) disk drives arranged in RAID level 0, 1, 5 and 10 configurations and will be initially packaged in either a compact 1.6 terabyte capacity 1U chassis with battery protected cache memory or a 6.4 terabyte capacity 3U chassis with redundant power supplies. Both configurations are equipped with the industry's first 10Gbps Ethernet interface.
The xStack Storage products will also include extensive volume virtualization features including support for JBOD, Striped Sets, Mirrored Sets, Striped Mirrored Sets, and Parity Sets. The platforms enable automatic detection of failed drives and automatic rebuilds of spare drives from global hot spare pools. The IP storage area network systems also implement a feature called Micro Rebuilds that significantly reduces the wait time for requesting systems caused by missed or error drive commands. The management and monitoring of the storage devices are accomplished through included IP SAN Device Manager software. The IP SAN Device Manager can be used to remotely configure and monitor the IP SAN storage subsystems via standards compliant Storage Management Initiative (SMI-S) clients embedded in the xStack Storage devices.
The xStack Storage iSCSI interface can consist of up to eight-gigabit Ethernet LAN attachments or a single 10-gigabit Ethernet attachment with full support for eight IEEE 802.1Q compliant VLANs, DiffServ and IEEE 802.1P compliant Quality of Service, and IEEE 802.3ad Link Aggregation Groups. The xStack Storage iSCSI devices will also support jumbo frames on the gigabit Ethernet network to provide the highest throughput possible on the IP SAN. Coupled with a LAN switch such as D-Link's high performance xStack Switches that have complimentary feature sets, the xStack Storage iSCSI storage arrays provide a very simple to install, easy to manage, and extremely affordable IP Storage Area Networking solution.
Availability
On display in June at the Supercomm trade show, the D-Link xStack Storage IP Storage Arrays will be available in Q3 through authorized reseller and distribution partners in the North American region in a 1U 1.6 terabyte capacity configuration and a 3U 6.4 terabyte capacity version.
