PMC-Sierra Announces Wireless-Capable Voice Over IP 'Router On A Chip'
Posted on: Tuesday, 7 June 2005, 06:00 CDT
PMC-Sierra (Nasdaq:PMCS) today announced the newest addition to its broad portfolio of Multi-Service Processor (MSP) devices for Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) Customer Premises Equipment (CPE). The MSP4200 is a system-on-chip integrating the key components for Wireless VoIP Broadband Routers (see:Figure 1). Together with PMC-Sierra's Voice Processing Firmware Module, the MSP4200 provides a field-proven VoIP terminal solution offering Carrier-Class voice quality and latency across a wide range of challenging network conditions. PMC-Sierra's Carrier-Certified VoIP technology is the first to be certified by China Telecommunication Technology Labs (CTTL) and has achieved Best-In-Class results from the Telecommunications Technology Association (Korea) and CTTL.
"Voice-over-IP service deployment is experiencing rapid growth as competitive service providers target voice revenues and incumbent carriers introduce bundled triple-play services," said Ben Lin, Sercomm Corporation's chief technology officer and senior vice president. "Carriers recognize that a critical success factor for their broadband VoIP services is their ability to provide PSTN-equivalent voice quality even during congested IP network conditions."
PMC-Sierra's MSP4200 solution --
-- Delivers Carrier-Certified PSTN-quality VoIP service in multi-service wireless CPE platforms while supporting high bandwidth data routing performance with firewall security
-- Provides Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) with an easily customizable platform on which to develop highly differentiated features and derivative platforms
-- Enables Original Design Manufacturers (ODMs) to quickly deliver WiFi Broadband Customer Premises Equipment with Carrier-Class terminal adaptor functionality at very aggressive cost points
"The MSP4200 sets a new benchmark in delivering cost-effective Carrier-Class VoIP capability to broadband CPE platforms without compromising routing or firewall performance," said Dino Bekis, vice president of marketing for PMC-Sierra's Communications Products Division. "In combination with PMC-Sierra's flexible Voice Processing Firmware Module and a complete reference solution, it provides a foundation for our customers to bring unique and differentiated products quickly to market."
The MSP4200 integrates a 32-bit MIPS(R) processor and a DSP-based voice engine together on a proprietary multi-master prioritized-access system (see: Figure 2). This approach minimizes the MIPS processor's involvement in bus transactions, enabling maximum routing and firewall performance with up to 4 channels of simultaneous voice. A PCI interface provides designers with maximum flexibility to support the widest possible range of 802.11 WiFi chipsets and other peripherals. The MSP4200 will be supported with a complete Linux-based reference solution along with board support packages for both Linux and VxWorks.
PMC-Sierra's Voice Processing Firmware Module utilizes jitter-buffer and packet-loss concealment technology from Global IP Sound's NetEQ. "GIPS technology is field-proven with over 200 million copies currently deployed in the market, and its innovation continues to set the bar for quality in VoIP," said Wendy Toth, vice president of marketing at Global IP Sound.
Availability
The MIPS-Powered MSP4200 processor along with the complete open-source reference design will be available in Q3, 2005, and is part of a growing family of Multi-Service Processor devices for consumer, SOHO, and small-medium enterprise CPE applications (see: Figure 3). The common architecture and software environment maintained across the MSP family ensures that multiple products can be developed on a single platform with maximum software re-use.
