September 4, 2008

Tokyo, Sept. 4 (Jiji Press)–Microsoft Corp. and 12 other firms will acquire stakes in Japan International Broadcasting Inc., the unit of Japan Broadcasting Corp., the nation’s sole public broadcaster more widely known as NHK, said Thursday.

Japan International Broadcasting is scheduled to start satellite and Internet-based English-language television broadcast in February.

The company plans to raise 190 million yen in fresh capital by early October by issuing new shares, a move that will lower NHK’s stake to about 61 pct.

NTT Communications Corp. is also among the 13 investors as Japan International Broadcasting plans to use broadband communication networks.

The investors also include Fuji Television Network Inc. , Nippon Television Network Corp. , Tokyo Broadcasting Systems Inc. and TV Asahi Corp. , major TV broadcasters Japan International Broadcasting hopes to cooperate with in content development.END
