Sony Recalls Vaio TZ-Series Laptops

Posted on: Thursday, 4 September 2008, 18:00 CDT

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a voluntary recall of Sony Vaio TZ-series notebook computers due to a burn hazard.

Two different problems -- misplaced wires near the computer's hinge or a loose screw inside the hinge -- could cause the computer to short circuit or overheat, CPSC said.

About 73,000 of the computers were sold nationwide between July 2007 and August 2008 for between $1,700 and $4,000.

The recall involves Vaio VGN-TZ100 series, VGN-TZ200 series, VGN-TZ300 series and VGN-TZ2000 series notebook computers, CPSC said.

"Not all units are affected; consumers should contact Sony to determine if their unit is included in the recall," the CPSC statement said.

The computers were made in Japan and the United States for Sony Electronics Inc. of San Diego, Calif.

Consumers were advised to stop using the recalled computers and contact Sony to see if their specific unit is involved in the recall. Sony will provide free inspections and repairs, if needed, CPSC said.

Consumers can call 888-562-6219 for information.

You have the wrong information. The Sony did not ask to stop using the laptop. Please refer to Sony's site.
