Intel Launches Halogen-Free Processors
Intel has introduced expanded its 45nm manufacturing chip portfolio with the addition of four halogen-free Xeon processors.
Intel said its Quad-Core Xeon Processor 5400 Series and the Dual-Core Xeon Processor X5270 are the first halogen-free processors.
It is the latest of Intel’s efforts to reduce the environmental impact of its chips. Last year, it began using lead-free solder with its Penryn family of chips produced using a 45nm process.
Systems vendors supporting the new processors include Asus, Dell, Fujitsu, IBM, NEC and Sun Microsystems. The company will also provide the halogen-free versions of the previously launched Intel Xeon 5200 and 5400 series.
Kirk Skaugen, vice president and general manager of server platforms group at Intel, said: “Customers using these new Xeon processors will not only benefit from greater performance and energy efficiency within existing platforms, but they will be the very first to use Intel’s halogen-free technology.”
The new 5400 series processors are available at a price range of $562 to $1,493, while the X5270 will be available at $1,172.
