Renesas Technology’s SH-MobileUL2 Application Processor Offers a Low Power Solution for Feature-Rich Mobile Multimedia Applications

Renesas Technology America, Inc. today announced the SH-MobileUL2, a new member of the popular SH-Mobile series of application processors for mobile applications. The device’s enhanced cost-performance ratio, improved design and high level of integration allow customers to design popularly priced portable media players and mobile phones incorporating multimedia processing functions previously found mainly in high-end models.

The new application processor (product name: SH7366) meets a growing consumer demand for mobile digital TV capable phones, personal navigation and portable players that offer high picture quality in an expanding array of multimedia applications, yet are affordably priced. When built into new designs, this device will enable consumers to view color entertainment content on high-volume mainstream phones, such as terrestrial digital TV broadcasts, video captured using a mobile phone on a standard TV, and video clips stored on memory cards.

Delivering more performance, plus added features

The SH-MobileUL2 processor offers approximately 30 percent power saving for video playback applications compared with previous products. It achieves 30 fps (30 frames per second) encoding and decoding performance with a D1-size display (720 x 480 pixels). Also, to help simplify designs and reduce overall system cost, the processor has more built-in peripheral functions, including a USB 2.0 (Hi-Speed) interface and an on-chip digital-to-analog (D/A) converter for TV output. A small (8mm x 10mm), 284-pin BGA package includes a microprocessor and system memory, facilitating the design of phones that are smaller and more convenient.

A key on-chip peripheral function is the VPU (Video Processing Unit). This high-performance, power efficient video processing IP supports the H.264/MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) moving-image compression standard used in mobile digital TV systems worldwide. The VPU also can handle other moving-image applications such as video e-mail, videophone pictures, and camcorder-style video clips. Performance is enhanced by a dedicated on-chip video processing memory.

In a multimedia mobile phone, the SH-MobileUL2 is paired with a single system-in-package (SiP) external memory device containing either 128Mbits or 256Mbits of Double-Data-Rate 1 (DDR I) mobile RAM. This system architecture reduces the current consumption during memory accesses.

Besides the VPU, the SH-MobileUL2 device provides numerous signal interfaces and processing functions. A camera interface for direct connections to a 5-megapixel camera module allows high-speed reading of large-volume image data. It also enables display features such as electronic zoom, on-screen display and a hardware-implemented cursor. Additionally, there is a built-in LCD controller that supports TFT color panels.
