VeriSign Unveils New Mobile Media Enablement Solution for Social Networking
CTIA WIRELESS I.T. & ENTERTAINMENT — Staying connected with social networking destinations while on the go just got easier. VeriSign Messaging and Mobile Media, a division of VeriSign, Inc. (NASDAQ: VRSN), the trusted provider of Internet infrastructure services for the networked world, today announced the release of VeriSign(R) Xoomerang, its carrier-based mobile media enablement solution. Designed to satisfy the fast-growing number of mobile consumers who utilize online social networking and media destinations, Xoomerang allows users to view, publish, and interact with online destinations through easy-to-use interfaces.
“Social networking is positioned to be the next big opportunity for the wireless industry, but to unlock its full potential today requires not only improvements in the mobile user experience but also solutions that leverage the existing operator infrastructure,” said Warren Faleiro, vice president, Multimedia Applications for VeriSign’s Messaging and Mobile Media division. “Using Xoomerang, wireless operators can immediately connect their subscribers to a host of destinations while also providing an enhanced user experience.”
Built on the backbone of VeriSign’s highly scalable mobile infrastructure, Xoomerang leverages the company’s extensive carrier relationships and global reach to help operators make mobile social networking and media enablement a reality for millions of users worldwide. In addition, Xoomerang provides an enhanced user experience with a rich media client for publishing and consuming media. It also facilitates immediate user adoption using a carrier’s existing infrastructure.
YouTube, the world’s most popular online video community, is among the many online destinations available via Xoomerang. VeriSign will enable users to easily upload and share video clips on YouTube’s site through their mobile devices.
The release of Xoomerang coincides with online social networking’s staggering growth worldwide and its expected migration to the mobile ecosystem. According to estimates by Gartner, Inc.(1), about 180 million mobile users worldwide in 2008 use some form of mobile social networking service weekly, that is about six percent of the total base. More significantly, Gartner says, adoption will increase to more than 800 million by 2012.
According to Julie Ask, research director for JupiterResearch in their recently published Mobile Social Networking report(2), a confluence of events, ranging from 3G ubiquity, to teens and young adults increasingly focusing on social networks for online communications, is fundamentally altering consumer expectations of cellular services. Social networks hold the potential to be a killer application for cell phones. To drive wireless use, carriers must provide a solution that simplifies the posting of content to social media and networking sites and the user experience once the application is on the phone.
Xoomerang’s Media Interexchange catalog management tool allows carriers to program pre-integrated destination sites available to users from a master catalog of connected sites and to configure custom places. Users can then personalize their account by choosing favorite destinations from either a handset or on the Web. As new destinations are added to the catalog, subscribers are automatically alerted both on the Internet and by text message.
