Facebook Birthday Greetings for Ivy, 103

September 10, 2008

By Fiona Evans

Ivy Bean received goodwill messages from her global army of fans and friends as far afield as Hollywood and Israel. The former mill worker from Yorkshire decided to sign up to the Internet site after hearing about a 97-year-old French woman who was believed to be the oldest member of Facebook.Having started out with nine friends a month ago, Mrs Bean has proved so popular on the site that a campaign has been launched to allow her even more friends after reaching the maximum number allowed. But the limit has not stopped people joining her fan page, which at the last count boasted more than 16,000 people and was listed under the title of “celebrity/ public figure”.Some of Mrs Bean’s fans are even calling for her to be made a dame. The sprightly centenarian is also preparing to take part in a Nintendo Wii competition at the residential home where she lives at in Bradford.”The fuss doesn’t bother me at all,” she said. “It’s lovely, I’m really enjoying it. All the people are really nice. You could meet someone who was right miserable, but I’m not miserable at all.”Mrs Bean, who turned 103 on Monday, had never even used a keyboard until staff at Hillside Manor residential home introduced her to the internet earlier this year.
