Matchmine Demonstrates Commitment to Openness and Data Portability
Posted on: Monday, 15 September 2008, 09:00 CDT
matchmine(TM), the premier media discovery network, today announced several major enhancements that significantly improve the user experience and underscore the company's commitment to open standards and data portability. Available immediately, users can now access their MatchKey with an OpenID, import user preference information from sites such as Netflix, Last.fm, and YouTube, and also export their MatchKey user preference information.
"We believe that a user's information is their own, and they should be in control of sharing it with whomever they choose," said J. Trent Adams, founder and chief innovator of matchmine. "The new functionality we've added underscores our commitment to openness and data portability. On the inbound side, we're letting users feed their MatchKey with existing preferences from other sites. We've also opened the door outbound, allowing users to export the preference model of their media interests we create for them. It'll be exciting to see what users come up with as they share their MatchKey beyond the network."
By joining the matchmine Media Discovery Network, partners enable their users to save their personal preferences in a MatchKey(TM) - a sophisticated digital representation of a user's personal interests and tastes. Users can easily share their MatchKey with any site within the matchmine Media Discovery Network. Each user's MatchKey evolves with use, creating a deep understanding of their preferences, which enables every site in the network to present more relevant content. The more a MatchKey is used, the better it reflects a user's individual tastes and the better the experience all partners in the network are able to deliver.
New enhancements include:
-- MatchKey Feeder - MatchKey users can now import their preference information directly into their MatchKey from sites outside the matchmine Media Discovery Network, including Netflix, Last.fm, Pandora, YouTube and Bloglines. For users, this provides off-network access to their personal preference information, significantly enhancing their discovery experience within the network. For matchmine partners, this allows them to leverage their user's preferences beyond those gathered within the matchmine Media Discovery Network.
-- MatchKey Streamer -MatchKey users can now export, or stream, the preference data contained within their MatchKey and share it with whomever they choose. Streams are currently available in three XML formats: Raw MatchKey, MatchKey Vectors, and APML. Each stream allows the user the choice of making it public, or to keep it private for selective use, all under their control. Additional streaming options will be made available over time, including a simple tag cloud format and a context-rich semantic representation.
-- OpenID - MatchKey.com and sites in the matchmine Media Discovery Network now support OpenID, the open standard that allows you to sign in to websites using a single account. Users with accounts at Yahoo, Flickr, and AOL as well as specialized OpenID providers like myOpenID, claimID, and Verisign can now easily access their MatchKey.
"The most exciting aspect of the new functionality we've released is the foundation we've built for future expansion," said Adams. "We've laid the groundwork upon which we can continue rolling out additional feeder sources and streaming formats. With this initial effort complete, we're looking forward to supporting additional existing and emerging open standards."
