Ericsson has won a five-year contract from UK-based communications provider Cable & Wireless EAUS (Europe, Asia, and US) to supply and operate a complete GSM mobile network. The value of the contract is thought to be approximately $100m.
Ericsson will provide a radio-access network based on small and low-power GSM base stations. The network will provide indoor fixed and mobile coverage to enterprise users and allow roaming with C&W's national roaming partners.
Ericsson will also provide a service-layer network with applications for service provisioning, SMS, and voicemail that will allow Cable & Wireless to offer fixed mobile convergence services to customers.
The contract follows several other similar networking contracts recently awarded to Ericsson. Earlier this month, it won a three-year $450m contract from Vietnam-based Hanoi Telecom to develop and modernize its nationwide mobile network. In August, it won a five-year contract to supply, build, integrate operate and manage multi-play communications infrastructure for Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah Economic City.
Jim Marsh, chief executive at Cable & Wireless EAUS, said: "Ericsson's proven expertise in mobile technologies and network operations will provide us with a high-performance, quality solution to control operating costs and enable us to bring compelling services for our customers, such as FMC, to market."
