Social Search Aids Collaboration and Innovation, Says Vivisimo Chief Scientist
PITTSBURGH, Sept. 17 /PRNewswire/ — Social search, the leading edge of innovative enterprise search platforms, can be a powerful technology deployed by visionary firms to nurture and grow their social capital. Why is increasing social capital important? Management experts agree that increasing a firm’s social capital, which includes improving collaboration, can lead to product innovations. Social search brings it all together.

Exploring the impact of social search, Jerome Pesenti, chief scientist and co-founder of Vivisimo, (vivisimo.com) will deliver a presentation this week, “Jump-starting Collaboration with Enterprise Search 2.0,” at Gartner’s Portals, Content & Collaboration Summit.
Pesenti’s talk, scheduled for Friday, Sept. 19, at 9:45 a.m., in the Beverly Hills Room, of the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza in Los Angeles, will cover:
“As enterprises begin to adopt Web 2.0 functionality, they must answer a fundamental question: How can they effectively integrate these web-based tools into their organization? The answer is through search. Learn how social search has opened the doors to all stored content – and how users can collaborate on it.”
Showing how enterprise search enhances collaboration, productivity and innovation is core to Vivisimo, a part of its DNA as a spinout from Carnegie Mellon University, a research institution known for its behavioral focus on solving real-world problems. Pesenti researched document clustering, data mining and artificial intelligence at Carnegie Mellon before joining with fellow computer scientists Raul Valdes-Perez and Christopher Palmer to found Vivisimo.
Social enterprise search creates new connections within organizations, helping to grow social capital. These new connections are vital. “Social Capital and Value Creation: The Role of Intrafirm Networks,” published in the Academy of Management Journal in August 1998, notes: “(W)e provided clear performance implications for the role of intrafirm (or interunit) networks by showing how social capital contributed to product innovations at the business unit level.”
“If an executive wants to increase his or her firm’s productivity and innovation – and who doesn’t – they’ve got to look at a technology that will help them accomplish these goals,” said Pesenti. “If done right, social search as part of enterprise search – with tagging, ranking and annotation – facilitates the creation of new connections between employees and the hidden intelligence of their organization, and encourages new collaborations and innovations.”
Pesenti has elaborated on his views in the white paper, “Jump-Starting Collaboration with Social Search,” available on the Vivisimo web site, with free registration (http://vivisimo.com/landing/download-collaboration).
The Gartner Portals, Content & Collaboration (http://www.gartner.com/it/page.jsp?id=648610) provides comprehensive coverage of workplace technologies, direction and best practices for business and IT professionals. Gartner calls it “the productivity-minded event focused on finding better ways to deliver resources, streamline content delivery and storage, and bring people together for greater efficiency.”
