FREMONT — Baseball legend Rickey Henderson will sign autographs and pose for photos with fans during an education fair Saturday at Kennedy High School.
The “Home Run for Education” fair, sponsored by the Fremont Chamber of Commerce, technology firm Cisco Systems and the Oakland A’s, will focus on the use of technology in schools.
Cisco and the A’s are business partners in a proposal to build a new ballpark for the team in Fremont.
The fair, which organizers hope will become an annual event, will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Kennedy High, at the corner of Stevenson Boulevard and Blacow Road.
Henderson, a former A’s outfielder who holds baseball’s career record for most stolen bases, will meet with fans from 11 a.m. to noon, along with Stomper, the A’s mascot.
A’s owners Lew and Keith Wolff also are scheduled to make an appearance.
A school curriculum expert will hold two half-hour parent information sessions, starting at 10:15 and 11:45 a.m., to discuss 21st century skills, Internet safety and kid-friendly Web sites.
Other sessions will be offered to educators. Throughout the day, Fremont teachers will demonstrate to their peers how they’re using digital technology in their classrooms.
Members of local school marching bands are scheduled to perform.
The event is free.
Proceeds from the sale of $5 Outback Steakhouse lunches will go toward the chamber’s “Dollars for Scholars” program, which awards scholarships to students in Fremont, Newark, Union City, Sunol and Milpitas.
