Motorola and NII Holdings, Inc. Announce Commercial Launch of Melody, Motorola’s Next-Generation iDEN(R) Network
SANTIAGO, Chile, Sept. 24 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Motorola, Inc. and NII Holdings, Inc. , one of the world's leading providers of fully integrated mobile communication services designed to meet the needs of customers, today announced the commercial launch of Melody, Motorola's next-generation iDEN dispatch and telephone interconnect core switching platform in order to provide enhanced service to Nextel's clients in Chile. NII Holdings is the preferred wireless provider among Latin America's high-value customers, offering a differentiated communication solution that integrates high quality push-to-talk (PTT) and customer-demanded data services in select Latin American markets.
The new Melody platform lets push-to-talk and telephone interconnect users roam and seamlessly communicate with other iDEN subscribers in four NII Holdings markets -- Argentina, Brazil, Mexico and Peru -- as well as with iDEN subscribers in the United States. The Melody switching core platform also has the ability to elegantly scale up in capacity over time to serve several million dispatch and interconnect subscribers and to expand to more than 1,000 cell sites.
"The iDEN Melody core architecture is a state-of-the-art design. It is a major mid-life network architecture upgrade program that will provide low-cost, scalable capacity to ensure long-term economic growth capability for iDEN network operators worldwide," said Fred Wright, Motorola's senior vice president for Cellular and iDEN Infrastructure Business.
The new iDEN Melody dispatch and interconnect architecture utilizes the latest advanced telecom computing architecture (ATCA) hardware, which is becoming the wireless telecom industry standard platform for many new products. The new ATCA-based Melody switching core has all the same features and scalable capacity as the first-generation, high-capacity iDEN core design but occupies about one-tenth the amount of floor space and has significantly lower power consumption and operating costs for the iDEN operator. The Melody platform is planned to be generally available in Q4 2008 for new iDEN market opportunities.
Motorola currently has iDEN networks operating with 25 operators in 23 countries worldwide with more than 24 million subscribers.
