Zeta Interactive's RelevantNoise(TM) Technology Shows the Impact of the Financial Crisis on the 2008 Presidential Election

Posted on: Wednesday, 24 September 2008, 15:00 CDT

NEW YORK, Sept. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- The recent market turmoil has touched almost every aspect of daily life and the 2008 Presidential election has not been an exception. The presidential election had previously dominated blogs, message boards and chat rooms across the large majority of the Internet.

Now, according to RelevantNoise(TM), Zeta Interactive's technology that mines the Internet's social media landscape -- including more than 100 million blogs, as well as countless message boards and online communities -- the buzz on the Internet has shifted a bit to factor in market concerns, causing some of the buzz that candidates have worked so hard to generate to be lost.

Between September 14 and September 20, the elections greatly overshadowed any discussion of an economic crisis by a factor of 87 percent to 13 percent. However, according to RelevantNoise, Barack Obama's volume, or online buzz, dropped 22 percent since during the week of the financial crisis, while John McCain's volume dropped by 18 percent.

Also during the economic crisis on Wall Street, McCain received approximately 14 percent more volume than Obama regarding their stances on the financial market, yet each candidate shared an equally negative tone in those posts -- with Obama receiving 53 percent negative and McCain 54 percent negative.

"With Zeta Interactive's RelevantNoise technology, we're able to show the impact that current events have on the electoral process and gauge how those events affect the voting public in the blogosphere," said Al DiGuido, CEO of Zeta Interactive. "As the eyes of the country focus on the challenging economic environment, we've found that people look to the candidates for answers and express themselves through the millions of blogs and online media sites available to them."

Even as the government steps in to quell some of the market instability, more financial institutions remain on the brink of joining the fray of the previous week and reaction in the blogosphere is sure to reflect any more dissatisfaction among social media enthusiasts. A growing number of organizations rely on social media technology to collect vital business and competitive intelligence to help drive decisions regarding their brands and products.

About RelevantNoise

RelevantNoise is a Web-based, user-driven social media mining tool that instantly taps into the over 100 million blogs, as well as message boards and online communities within the Internet's social media landscape, providing real-time feedback and insight on the consumer trends and opinions that help drive their behaviors.

In addition to measuring the volume and tone of conversations across the blogosphere, RelevantNoise also measures the influence level of bloggers, and provides links to all related posts. The technology is also able to measure competitors' Internet buzz as well, including share-of-voice. A company or political campaign can now compare the volume and tone of buzz surrounding its organization vs. the competition to help gauge the effectiveness of messaging and/or quickly change strategy when necessary.
