TeleCable Initiates Deployment of Eutelsat's Tooway(TM) Consumer Satellite Broadband Service in Spain's Asturias Region

Posted on: Friday, 3 October 2008, 12:00 CDT

PARIS, October 3 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Following a contract signed on July 27 between TeleCable and Skylogic (Eutelsat's broadband affiliate), Telecable is now initiating widespread deployment of the Tooway(TM) satellite broadband service in Asturias (a northern region of Spain). With this agreement between Skylogic and TeleCable, the leading provider of cable and Internet services in Asturias, up to 6000 Tooway(TM) terminals will be deployed throughout the region in order to deliver broadband to homes located in non-served ADSL areas.

Tooway(TM) was selected by TeleCable on the basis of its unrivalled performance and competitive prices. The Tooway(TM) system is based on ViaSat's SurfBeam(TM) technology, a fully proven technology for largescale deployment already widely deployed in the USA by Wildblue which counts 400 000 subscribers.

"The selection of Tooway(TM) as our prime satellite service enables us now to offer a valid broadband solution everywhere in Asturias. This is a significant step towards bridging the digital divide in Spain and we are particularly pleased with our cooperation with Eutelsat and Skylogic in this area. We also look forward to the arrival in 2010 of KA-SAT, the revolutionary satellite that will provide us with the possibility to serve even better Spanish homes". By signing this agreement, TeleCable will be able to offer broadband connectivity in the countryside, "This is very important in our region, where thousands of Asturias' people live and develop their activities", said Roberto Paraja CEO of TeleCable.

Arduino Patacchini, CEO of Skylogic and Multimedia Director of Eutelsat said: "We are delighted to start commercialisation of Tooway(TM) in Spain with our agreement with TeleCable for the Asturias region. This confirms the validity of choosing the Ka-band for broadband applications, which is the only solution capable of offering performance and prices for consumer satellite broadband that is comparable to terrestrial broadband services."
