Two Europeans Accused of Cyberattacks

A German national and a British citizen were responsible for cyberattacks on two U.S. Web sites, prosecutors alleged during the pair's indictment.
A federal grand jury in Los Angeles indicted 25-year-old German national Axel Gembe and 24-year-old British national Lee Graham Walker of allegedly conducting online attacks against retail Web sites Rapid Satellite and Weaknees, Deutsche Welle said Friday.
Prosecutors accused the European duo on Thursday of intentionally hacking into Rapid Satellite and Weaknees, based in Miami and Los Angeles, respectively, in order to damage their computer networks.
The suspects allegedly used a denial-of-service attack against the Web sites to assist an unidentified rival of the online companies. A denial-of-service attack is typically conducted by having multiple computers actively attack a single computer network. Such attacks eventually cause other visitors to the Web site to experience error messages.
Deutsche Welle said the two men, who are facing extradition to the United States, could be sentenced to 15 years in prison if convicted.
