Dataram First to Double Memory Capacities of Sun Fire V490 & V890 Servers

Posted on: Thursday, 23 June 2005, 12:00 CDT

Dataram announced it has successfully doubled the maximum memory capacity of Sun Microsystems' Sun Fire V490 and V890 servers. Dataram's DRS880/8192 memory upgrade enables customers to expand memory capacity to 32GB in each of up to 4 CPU/Memory Modules. Now, twice the memory capacity can be configured per processor--a more cost effective strategy for running certain applications than adding unneeded processors. Extensive compatibility testing under elevated temperatures and stress loads confirmed the DRS880/8192 is a powerful option for memory intensive applications found in enterprise environments running Sun's advanced Solaris operating system.

The Sun Fire V490 and V890 are entry-level servers in Sun's UltraSPARC IV Midrange Server family. Memory for the servers resides on one or more CPU/Memory Modules each containing two UltraSPARC IV processors and sixteen memory slots.

"In addition to providing first to market products enabling the most powerful Sun servers available, Dataram memory options are priced up to 50% lower than Sun's memory upgrades, saving our customers thousands of dollars in each server," stated Jeff Epstein, Dataram's North American Sales Manager. "With the DRS880/8192 memory option, customers can now upgrade with high-density 2GB capacity dimms in each available memory slot," added Chris Lombardi, Dataram's Director Sales EMEA.

Both the V490 and V890 servers are targeted at applications such as database, transaction processing, e-commerce, decision support, ERP, application development and scientific engineering collaboration. The V490 features one or two CPU/Memory Modules, providing two or four processors and up to 64GB with Dataram's DRS880/8192 versus 32GB with available Sun memory options. The V890 features up to four CPU/Memory Modules, with up to eight processors and up to 128GB of Dataram memory. Current memory offerings for the Sun Fire V490 and V890 include:

Capacity DATARAM Sun Configuration 2GB DRS280/2048 X7051A 4 x 512MB 4GB DRS280/4096 X7056A 4 x 1GB 8GB DRS880/8192 NOT OFFERED 4 x 2GB
