Posted on: Wednesday, 15 October 2008, 06:00 CDT
BigBand Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: BBND), a leading innovator in digital video networking, today announced that Gehua Cable provided coverage of the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics Games using BigBand's Broadband Multimedia-Service Router (BMR). BigBand's BMR platform continues to be used today in Gehua's digital TV network headend system to reliably deliver video content to 1.7 million Beijing residents.
"The 2008 Beijing Olympics were a landmark event for our nation and it was Gehua's mission to provide a high-quality broadcast," said Mr. Wang Zhenhua, executive vice general manager at Gehua. "BigBand's BMR platform provided the reliability and performance needed during the Olympic Games, enabling more than 1.7 million digital TV viewers across Beijing to enjoy a memorable telecast."
Gehua first began installing the BigBand platform in its cable headends in 2006 and now has a dozen BMRs deployed across its network. Gehua plans to expand the digital video services it offers its subscribers to include more high definition programming, broader choices in on-demand titles, customer interactivity and more.
"China has demonstrated to a global audience that its infrastructures, including its digital television networks, are rapidly becoming world-class," said David Heard, BigBand's chief operating officer. "The BigBand BMR, one of the most widely-deployed video networking platforms in the world, provided the performance needed by Gehua to deliver Olympics coverage to millions of residents."
The BigBand BMR1200 is a robust platform designed from the ground up to be carrier-class and offer five 9's availability. It is field-proven, having been deployed by over 200 service providers worldwide, in 4,000-plus installations. The BigBand BMR is intended to offer the flexibility needed to support applications such as HDTV, video on demand, network-based DVR, digital television management, IP video transport and digital simulcast. It allows service providers to cost-effectively scale their networks from hundreds of subscribers up to millions.
