Woods Bagot Selects Blue Coat ProxySG and PacketShaper Products to Accelerate Critical Applications to Global Branch Offices
Blue Coat Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:BCSI), the leader in WAN Application Delivery and Secure Web Gateway, today announced that global design company Woods Bagot has selected Blue Coat(R) ProxySG(R) and Blue Coat(R) PacketShaper(R) appliances to optimize its Wide Area Network (WAN) for the delivery of high quality voice and video communications and accelerate critical applications to 10 studios around the world.
Full Return on Investment in Just 3 Months From 60% Bandwidth Savings
The combination of ProxySG and PacketShaper appliances has enabled a 60 percent reduction in WAN bandwidth consumption. It took the firm just three months to achieve a full return on its investment in the solutions, based solely on WAN bandwidth savings alone.
“Only a combination of visibility, acceleration and security can provide the means to effectively utilize applications, content and communications anywhere on the network,” said Nectarios Lazaris, group global IT manager of Woods Bagot. “In addition to giving us control of applications and content, Blue Coat solutions have enabled us to increase total staff productivity by an estimated total of 83 hours.”
Combination of ProxySG and PacketShaper Appliances
The combination of Blue Coat ProxySG and PacketShaper appliances provides Woods Bagot with detailed understanding of what applications are running on the network and how they are performing. Through the application visibility and understanding provided by these products, the company can differentiate between important and unimportant or malicious traffic and then apply the appropriate security measures, traffic shaping and prioritization and application acceleration. ProxySG and PacketShaper appliances work together to provide a comprehensive infrastructure for application delivery and can be deployed in corporate studios around the world.
Dramatic Acceleration of Files, Remote Logins and Enterprise Applications
Woods Bagot is a global design studio with more than 1,000 employees across 16 studios in Australia, Asia, Europe, the Middle East and has recently expanded to North America. The company provides services in architecture, consulting, interior design and urban design. Because of the global nature of its business and the need for collaborative work between employees in different regions globally, Woods Bagot personnel need to routinely transfer files of 100 megabytes (Mb) and larger across the WAN. The combination of ProxySG and PacketShaper appliances provides an up to ten-fold increase in file transfer speed, making collaboration much more feasible.
Woods Bagot also relies on ProxySG appliances to accelerate Web content, Microsoft SharePoint file access, Auto CAD (license server), Symantec file replication, SQL database interactions, FTP traffic and certain SSL-encrypted application traffic. At the same time, since all studios globally have “direct-to-the-net” Internet access, rather than backhauling Internet traffic through a corporate headquarters, ProxySG appliances can provide protection from malicious attacks and, together with PacketShaper appliances, control over Web content and applications.
Quality Voice over IP and Video across the WAN
Woods Bagot uses its network for voice, video applications, including VoIP and video conferencing. Blue Coat PacketShaper appliances maintain quality for voice and video while preventing these communications streams from overwhelming data applications. In addition, the PacketShaper and ProxySG appliances work together to help manage employee use of podcasts and videos for business purposes. The combination of appliances is also helping Woods Bagot rollout an internal streaming media server for providing company-produced videos to employees. The company can manage the video streams as they traverse the WAN and store video in each studio through the caching capabilities of the ProxySG appliances.
“The combination of ProxySG and PacketShaper products brings together application visibility, acceleration, security and control to enable substantially more effective and efficient business processes,” said Matt Young, vice president of sales, Asia Pacific, Blue Coat Systems. “We are pleased to see how our combined solution can make such a remarkable impact on such a prestigious company as Woods Bagot.”
