Sun Launches SPARC Enterprise Server

Posted on: Wednesday, 15 October 2008, 15:00 CDT

Sun Microsystems has introduced a four-socket SPARC-based midrange server for ERP, CRM, database, and online transaction processing.

Sun said the SPARC Enterprise T5440 server offers up to four processors and up to 512GB of memory in a 4U rack-mount chassis. It has up to 32 cores (256 threads), 512GB of memory, and an intelligent fan control that adjusts rotational fan speed based on changes in temperature. It also has a power distribution subsystem with digital regulators to reduce energy wastage.

Sun said the server can be used for consolidation and virtualization and has a hardware-based server virtualization layer that allows multiple operating systems to run on their own logical domains. It works with a Sun Solaris software-based virtualization architecture that allows an application to be run in its own virtual machine.

John Fowler, executive vice president of Sun's systems group, said: "The Solaris-based SPARC Enterprise T5440 server offers incredible performance on a completely different curve in a footprint that's half the size of the competition. For customers, it all comes down to faster, smaller, greener, better. And with the built-in virtualization of Solaris, they can save even more."

Pricing starts at $44,995.

The Enterprise server is also available from Sun partner Fujitsu, which sells the machine under its own brand.
