T-Mobile Offers 3G Web Access to Germany

Posted on: Wednesday, 29 June 2005, 06:15 CDT

FRANKFURT, Germany -- Germany's T-Mobile International AG said Tuesday it has launched high-speed Internet access on mobile phones for its German subscribers and plans to expand the service to Britain, the Czech Republic and the Netherlands this year.

T-Mobile, part of Deutsche Telekom AG, said the subscription-based service - called web'n'walk - is available for $12.10 a month in Germany and lets users access the Internet over its 3G network.

Third-generation networks offer faster delivery of data and pictures than earlier systems. Initially, operators had slowed the launch of 3G because of a dearth in handsets for consumers, but with the rollout of new phones, the networks have started gaining in popularity.

Rene Obermann, T-Mobile's chief executive, said he expects the number of subscribers to reach more than 100,000 by the end of 2006.

T-Mobile said it also reached a deal with Google Inc. to make its popular search engine the preset home page for T-Mobile phones that can access the Internet.
