TI Introduces Lowest Power, 12- and 14-Bit, 1-MSPS SAR Analog-to-Digital Converters

Posted on: Friday, 17 October 2008, 09:00 CDT

DALLAS, Oct. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) today introduced four low-power analog-to-digital converters (ADC) that reduce power consumption while providing high performance for precision applications. The 12-bit ADS7229 and ADS7230 and the 14-bit ADS7279 and ADS7280 combine a 1-MSPS successive approximation register (SAR) ADC with inherent sample and hold and a conversion clock. The devices are designed for applications that require excellent AC and DC performance, high sampling rates and the lowest power consumption, such as portable medical instruments, multi-channel data acquisition systems and automated test equipment. (See http://www.ti.com/ads7279-pr.)

The ADS7229 and ADS7279 feature a single unipolar input for applications requiring a single data converter per channel. The ADS7230 and ADS7280 have a 2-to-1 input multiplexer that allows each ADC to digitize two channels, thereby reducing component count and board size. All four offer a SPI-compatible interface to minimize board space and simplify connection to the host device to enable increased channel densities and a smaller overall system footprint.

The devices offer improved accuracy for high dynamic range signals and exceptional signal-to-noise ratio. The new ADCs use 13.7 mW at 1 MSPS with a 3-V supply and are specified over the industrial temperature range of -40C to 85C. (See table below for additional product features.)

The ADCs are compatible with the ADS8329 and ADS8330 which consume only 15.5 mW and also have advanced onboard power-saving features that allow them to scale with sampling rate. The ADS7279 and ADS7280 are drop-in pin compatible with the ADS7229 and ADS7230, as well as the 16-bit ADS8329 and ADS8330. This family of ADCs works well with TI's OPA365 operational amplifier and REF3240 and REF3225 precision voltage references.

Availability and packaging

The ADS7229, ADS7230, ADS7279 and ADS7280 are available now in 16-pin, 4-mm x 4-mm QFN and 16-pin TSSOP packages. Pricing is included in the following table.
