ntl:Telewest Business, a supplier of communication services to the public and private sectors, has been selected by 97 schools through the Hillingdon Grid for Learning to connect primary, secondary and nursery schools across the area with high-speed network for e-learning.
The high-speed network, part of a five-year contract, will enable almost 60,000 staff and students to access e-learning facilities such as interactive exam revision applications (SAM Learning) and video-rich teaching resources (Espresso), according to ntl:Telewest Business.
The Hillingdon Grid for Learning (HGfL) works to deliver ICT outcomes for schools, and is a founding member of the London Grid for Learning.
The company deployed a high-speed Metro Ethernet VPN network, connecting Hillingdon's 97 nursery, primary and secondary schools. The new network reportedly ensures that capacity can be increased as and when it is required from either 10 to 100Mbps in 10Mb increments or 100Mbps to 1Gbps or higher in 100Mb increments.
With this high-speed connectivity, HGfL can now ensure that sites have access to web-based content and e-learning and teaching resources such as SAM Learning, an online subscription service that provides revision exercises and teststyle questions for key stage two, key stage three and GCSE, and Espresso, a digital library of video-rich cross-curricular resources, said ntl:Telewest Business.
