BSD Selects Cisco's MPEG Encoding and Internet Protocol Video System Platform

Cisco Systems, a provider of IP-based networking solutions, has announced that Broadcast Service Danmark, a provider of terrestrial transmission services in Denmark, has selected a Cisco MPEG encoding and internet protocol video system platform to enhance terrestrial distribution for national and regional TV broadcasters in Denmark.

The Cisco solution will reportedly help Broadcast Service Danmark (BSD) optimize its current MPEG-2 digital terrestrial television (DTT) multiplex and meet the upcoming requirements of four new MPEG-4 nationwide DTT multiplexes in Denmark.

Highlights of the system include local and distributed IP statistical multiplexing, IP-based aggregation of services using cost-effective IP-based video transport within the BSD encoding and video processing facility, said Cisco.

Additional key Cisco components in the BSD system include the Rosa Network Management System, which coordinates encoder backup via the Rosa Element Manager back-up task and provides overall system monitoring. Cisco Catalyst Layer three switches handle the IP aggregation of the encoders, and Cisco switches connect each piece of equipment to the management system, added Cisco.

Finn Pedersen, CEO of BSD, said: "We have come to rely upon Cisco as a trusted advisor for collaboration on architectures that meet the needs of BSD and our broadcast customers. The Cisco digital media and broadcast team and our technical staff have created the right encoding and IP statistical multiplexing solution for our customers and created a final design that meets our critical business plan goals."
