IBM Extends Infrastructure Services Relationship With Medicare of Australia for One Year

IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced it has signed a one-year extension to its contract with Australian government agency, Medicare, for the provision of IT infrastructure services.
Under the agreement, valued at approximately AUD$70 million, IBM will continue to provide mainframe, midrange, desktop, data warehouse and call center support, building on a relationship with Medicare which dates back to 2000.
Since that time, IBM has assisted Medicare in transforming its service provision to Australian healthcare constituents. Examples include supporting Medicare Australia Online Services, in which viewers can view, update and request information held by Medicare Australia, and enhancing the delivery of the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme, whereby payments are made to pharmacists to subsidize certain essential medicines.
During 2007, IBM supported more than four million mainframe transactions and two million web e-business transactions each day as thousands of entities, including pharmacies, general practitioners, health insurers, hospitals and individuals, connected with Medicare to deliver improved health outcomes for Australia.
"IBM is delighted to continue its relationship as a key partner to Medicare, enabling it to transform service delivery to become more flexible and responsive in meeting Australia's healthcare needs," said Steve Bond, General Manager for Public Sector, IBM Australia and New Zealand.
"As more and more Australians turn to the internet for provision of government services, IBM has a key role to play in providing Medicare with the robust, scaleable and secure technology it needs to deliver high quality government services to the Australian community."
The agreement was signed in October 2008.
