High hardware cost, licensing issues for video codecs, poor product positioning and the lack of video content have resulted in the slow market acceptance of portable media players (PMPs) in the past two years. However, the PMP supply market is expected to pick up in the coming years, fuelled by inexpensive flash-based players, growing broadband penetration and increasing availability of online music and user-generated video content. Global shipments of PMPs are projected to grow from more than 128 million units in 2008 to about 185 million units in 2011, according to iSuppli.
Although PMP export figures from China are not available as the product line is not tracked independently by customs, the country is estimated to account for 30 to 40 percent of global PMP shipments. CCID Consulting predicts that China's PMP industry will grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 34.5 percent from 2008 to 2012, outperforming the 30 percent CAGR for global shipments forecast by market research firm Parks Associates.
Despite ongoing competition from other media players, such as mobile phones, PDAs and UMPCs, PMPs are expected to retain their foothold in the market. However, PMP suppliers in China face a number of challenges, including intense price competition, the continued appreciation of the yuan against the US dollar, rising cost of raw materials and high oil prices.
The following are some of the key trends that we see in China's PMP industry:
- The majority of makers are reducing export quotes in the coming months to maintain their market share. The downward price adjustment is possible mainly because of cost savings derived from sourcing key components, such as LCD panels and flash memory chips, from overseas suppliers
- Price cuts will likely range from 5 to 10 percent. Price increases, however, will be seen in products with more value-added features and functions
- The EU will be the primary export market for many suppliers as they deliberately stay away from the US market due to concerns about currency exchange losses as a result of the appreciating yuan
- The lower power consumption requirement and compact design of PMPs, along with the availability of more affordable flash memory chips, have pushed many makers to abandon the production of HDD-based models
- Integration of more functions and cosmetic design enhancement will lead product development efforts of suppliers. Upcoming products will feature GPS, DVB, games, wireless connectivity, and support for more audio and video formats
