VPIsystems Helps Carriers Plan End-to-End Fiber Deployments

Posted on: Monday, 27 October 2008, 09:00 CDT

HOLMDEL, N.J., Oct. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- No longer a pipe dream, fiber to the node (FTTx) offers customers high-speed connections and seemingly endless bandwidth. Fiber-based services are in high demand from businesses and consumers alike, so to meet this demand and keep up with marketing commitments, carriers are in a race to roll out fiber as quickly as possible, investing enormous amounts of time and money.

Cable companies and traditional telcos are evaluating fiber and fiber-copper hybrid solutions to stay competitive in the marketplace and deliver the quality of service customers demand. Meanwhile, wireless providers are exploring fiber as a much-needed backhaul solution to handle the strain high-bandwidth services like streaming video are putting on their networks.

As they begin the process, however, they are discovering that planning and deploying a fiber-based network is no small feat. The process is both timely and costly - the cost of laying fiber ranges from $10,000 and $70,000 per mile - and must take into account existing infrastructure as well. To help carriers overcome these challenges, VPIsystems has developed a module for the OnePlan suite that is designed specifically to address FTTx planning. The new module was recently delivered to a Tier-1 carrier and is now in acceptance testing.

OnePlan Access for FTTx helps carriers plan fiber networks utilizing existing lines, and enables them to calculate optimal paths and equipment locations before they begin digging and deploying. It also assists in minimizing planning and engineering costs, by conducting analysis in a fraction of the time it would take to do manually.

"Evaluating multiple design options and running 'what if' analyses are complex human endeavors that are error-prone and costly when done incorrectly," said Mike Devlin, Vice President of Business Development, VPIsystems. "OnePlan Access for FTTx is going to save carriers headaches, time and money in the long-run, by taking the guess-work out of network planning and preventing them from having to dig an inch too far and ensuring their networks are designed to be scalable for the future - whatever it brings."

With OnePlan Access for FTTx carriers can: -- Plan and optimize fiber-based networks to include comprehensive next-generation OSS (NGOSS) functionality -- Use existing and/or add additional capacity to satisfy forecasted demand and calculate the associated costs -- Dimension pure fiber and fiber-copper hybrid networks based on their unique use cases, taking into account new and legacy equipment, as well as required cable facilities -- Determine the most economical network architecture, calculating optimal paths to meet service and revenue objectives at the lowest possible cost -- Standardize network planning approaches across the entire organization

"As fiber continues to grow in popularity, it becomes even more important for carriers to have a comprehensive system for planning their networks in advance of deployment to minimize both their own costs and those passed on to customers," said Nancee Ruzicka, analyst, Stratecast. "Delivering high quality services at the lowest possible cost will help carriers distinguish themselves from their competitors, and the VPIsystems solution for fiber can certainly help achieve that."

About OnePlan

OnePlan offers communications service providers a single, cross-domain (geography, technology, discipline and network domain) integrated capacity and network planning capability, OnePlan has become the system of choice for any carrier planning transition to a next-generation, IP-enabled network. Through its modular design, OnePlan provides a scalable solution that can start as a single technology module, and grow to a high-availability system spanning multiple network layers where OnePlan automates all network planning, engineering and decommissioning activities.
