Sprint to Add 130 Employees at Oklahoma City Customer Service Center

Sep. 17--Wireless carrier Sprint PCS said Tuesday it would add about 130 jobs at its Oklahoma City customer service center.
New customers and higher call volumes made it necessary to add employees at the call center, Sprint spokesman Steve Gavette said.
The jobs will start out paying more than $10 an hour, but that rate can increase depending on call center or customer service experience, Gavette said. The center, at 8525 Silver Crossing, handles calls from across the country and is open daily from 6 a.m. to midnight.
"The intention here is to be able to service the customers on a better basis," Gavette said. "We want to help them as quickly as we can so they don't have to wait on 'hold' any longer than necessary."
The new jobs will bring total employees at the call center to about 1,200. The center employed about 1,300 a year ago but decreased staff by not hiring replacements when employees quit.
"We had some natural attrition where we didn't replace some of the people," Gavette said. "But at this point we're looking for all kinds of good folks as Sprint keeps growing."
The announcement comes a week after Kansas-based Sprint Corp. said it would reorganize its business units in preparation for folding the separately traded Sprint PCS stock back into the parent company.
Sprint last week named Len Lauer as president and chief operating officer and said he would direct the company's reorganization.
"We're in the process of going to a 'one-Sprint' type of operation and making the units more closely aligned," Gavette said.
He said prospective employees for the Oklahoma City jobs should visit Sprint's Web site at www.sprint.com/hr to begin the application process.
Call centers continue to play an important part in the state's economy. About 70 call centers statewide employ more than 35,000 Oklahomans, according to the state Commerce Department.
