Meebo Powers Instant Messaging on Flixster.Com

October 29, 2008

Meebo, the Web’s live communications platform, today announced the first deployment of Meebo Community IM, an integrated instant messaging solution for online communities, on Flixster.com. Flixster, an online community for movie fans with a global reach of millions, integrated Meebo Community IM as the default instant messaging service for its entire user base. For Flixster, the partnership with Meebo enables live communication and real-time notifications between community members, increasing user engagement and time spent on site. The partnership also paves the way for monetization of the service — Meebo will serve ad units designed specifically for web instant messaging and will share revenue with Flixster.

Meebo designed its new solution to be extremely quick and easy to deploy by the site owner. Unlike homegrown IM solutions that can take months to develop and deploy, Flixster integrated Meebo Community IM in less than 2 weeks.

“Flixster thrives on the ability for users to connect with like-minded movie fans. Meebo adds a whole new level of real-time interactivity to our site — which is exactly what our users have been asking for,” said Joe Greenstein, co-founder and CEO, Flixster.

The launch of Meebo Community IM on Flixster begins a staged rollout to a network of signed partners that serve a total unduplicated global reach of 72.9 million (August 2008) and an unduplicated reach in the US of 26.2 million (August 2008), according to comScore Media Metrix. The list of partners that will be implementing Meebo Community IM includes Bleacher Report, DanceJam, Dhingana, Fanpop, Flixster, Global Grind, IBeatYou, myYearbook, Nickelodeon/MTVN Kids and Family Group’s AddictingGames, OrangeShark, Piczo, PerfSpot, SparkArt, Sugar Publishing, Tagged, UGAME.net, Yaari, Zinch, and Zorpia.

“We are thrilled to implement the first rollout of Meebo Community IM. Going live on Flixster is the first step to creating a better social experience for communities. Meebo will let people IM their friends, no matter which network they belong to,” said Seth Sternberg, co-founder and CEO, Meebo.

Meebo serves 40 million people and handles over 5 billion messages per month. The company has raised $37.5 million from investors Sequoia Capital, Draper Fisher Jurvetson, JAFCO Ventures, Time Warner Investments, and KTB Ventures. Key components of Meebo Community IM

— Integrated Instant Messaging: Meebo Community IM is integrated seamlessly into the partner site as a subtle horizontal footer. The footer is displayed on the bottom of the browser as the user scrolls the page and persists as the user browses pages across the site.

— Friends Become IM Buddies: Users can chat with social network friends right alongside their traditional IM network buddies by logging into their social network account on meebo.com, or entering meebo.com via a link directly from the partner site. Social network friends are incorporated into the users’ pre-existing network of IM buddies, allowing instant access to the full spectrum of their online friends.

— Live User Updates: The Meebo Web Service API lets partners provide real-time updates to users on Meebo. For example, a partner can send notifications to users about their friends’ activity on the network.

— Integration with Registration Systems: Meebo’s instant messaging capabilities seamlessly integrate with the partner’s registration system. Meebo Community IM brings live communication to the user’s existing social graph. No additional account signup is required.

— Best in Class Web IM: Meebo Community IM includes many popular features familiar to users of meebo.com. Examples include emoticons, timestamps, buddy icons, sound toggling, and status messages.

— User Presence: Partners can leverage presence information from Meebo to display user presence across their network. Users can visit profiles and see whether or not their friends are online, and initiate a conversation. For partners, Meebo handles the difficult task of managing presence for their users.
