CVS Caremark Partners With Google Health to Provide Consumers With Online Access to Their Prescription History Through Caremark.Com
WOONSOCKET, R.I., Oct. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- CVS Caremark today announced an extension to its partnership with Google Health, which will enable consumers who utilize the company's pharmacy benefit management services to securely store, organize and manage their prescription history information online. Consumers are now able to link their http://www.caremark.com/ account to Google Health in order to securely import their prescription history into their Google Health Personal Health Record (PHR). Access to this information can further facilitate and enhance communications between consumers and their health care providers.
"We are excited to be able to provide our PBM clients and their customers with the ability to securely import their individual prescription histories into a Google Health PHR," said Jon Roberts, Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer at CVS Caremark. "Our partnership with Google Health underscores our commitment to facilitating greater consumer engagement in health care and enables us to provide our clients and customers with innovative health and pharmacy services that are safe, affordable and easy to access."
"For example, one of our PBM clients, CDPHP(R) based in Albany, NY, is working with us to provide the patients the support with connectivity to Google Health given their strong belief in the importance of ensuring open communication and information sharing with patients and their health care providers," said Roberts.
All CVS Caremark PBM clients have been provided with the opportunity to make this connectivity with Google Health available to their plan participants and, to date, many CVS Caremark clients have chosen to make this offering available. As of today, many CVS Caremark plan participants are able to securely import their prescription information from http://www.caremark.com/ into their Google Health account. In order to maintain patient privacy, the consumer making the request for information will need to be authenticated on the caremark.com Web site before any data is shared with Google Health.
"CDPHP(R) is excited to work with our PBM, CVS Caremark, to bring this high-tech health management tool to our employer groups and members," said John D. Bennett, MD, president and CEO, CDPHP. "With the increased trend toward consumer-directed health care, we believe that our members can greatly benefit from utilizing personal health records as another way to take an active role in making their health care decisions."
CDPHP was founded and guided by physicians in 1984 as a not-for-profit individual practice association (IPA) model Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) in Albany, NY. CDPHP and its affiliates currently serve members in 29 counties throughout New York State and seven counties in Vermont.
CVS Caremark has been involved with Google Health since it was launched in May 2008. At the time of launch, patients who received treatment at MinuteClinic locations in Knoxville and Chattanooga, Tennessee were able to securely import their visit summaries into their Google Health accounts. MinuteClinic is the retail-based health clinic subsidiary of CVS Caremark, and this function has been rolled out nationwide to the more than 500 MinuteClinic locations in 25 states. In addition, by the end of the year, consumers who fill their prescriptions at a CVS/pharmacy, or on http://www.cvs.com/, will also be able to securely import their prescription histories into Google Health.
