Sprint-Nextel Severs Internet Connection to Cogent Communications

October 31, 2008

US-based telecom operator Sprint-Nextel has severed its internet connection to Cogent Communications thereby partitioning the internet. It is no longer possible for many customers of Sprint and Cogent to directly communicate across the internet.

According to Cogent, Sprint did so in violation of a contractual obligation to exchange internet traffic with it on a settlement free peering basis. Sprint and Cogent are engaged in litigation over this matter.
