AT&T Awards $50,000 to San Jose After-School All-Stars Program

Posted on: Monday, 3 November 2008, 12:00 CST

SAN JOSE, Calif., Nov. 3 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- AT&T Inc. announced today a $50,000 contribution to After-School All-Stars in Greater San Jose, which provides after-school programs for at-risk middle school and high school children. The organization offers children positive alternatives to drugs, gangs and violence by providing opportunities for them to focus on technology, education, sports and life skills.

Serving 60,000 youth annually through after-school and summer programs in 14 U.S. cities, After-School All-Stars improves the lives of children by providing a place where they can nurture their minds, bodies and spirits. The organization's programs incorporate independent learning, academics and enrichment activities such as tutoring, homework completion, physical fitness and leadership development.

"AT&T is very committed to connecting young people with learning opportunities. Through this contribution, we hope to help strengthen the future for kids and position them for lifelong success," said Loretta Walker, AT&T Vice President, External Affairs, Bay Area.

"Thanks to the generosity of AT&T, we will have the resources to implement our comprehensive after-school programs and help the 3,000 youth we serve daily avoid school failure, criminal involvement or other unhealthy behaviors," said John Poch, Executive Director, After-School All-stars, Greater San Jose. "Our programs provide academic support, social development, recreational opportunities, and they not only benefit the children, but the school communities and the families we serve as well."

This funding is part of a $303,000 national contribution to the After-School All-Stars organization to support after-school programs in San Jose, San Diego, Orlando, Miami, Columbus and San Antonio. Since 2004, AT&T has contributed more than $1.5 million to the After-School All-Stars program.

More than 15 million children in the United States have no place to go after school. Law enforcement has labeled the hours between 3 and 6 p.m. as the "danger zone" -- when kids are more likely to engage in activities that involve drugs, alcohol and gang activity, as well as become susceptible to crime and violence. In many instances, the only time children participate in extracurricular activities like physical education, music, drama and community service activities is in after-school programs.

Earlier this year, the AT&T Foundation announced a new signature initiative, AT&T Aspire, which helps address high school success and workforce readiness. AT&T has committed a total of $100 million in philanthropy through 2011 to schools and nonprofit organizations that are focused on high school retention and better preparing students for college and the workforce.
