Micrel Launches Incredible Shrinking LDOs Featuring Best-in-Class Performance for Space Constrained Applications

November 4, 2008

Micrel Inc., (NASDAQ: MCRL), an industry leader in analog, high bandwidth communications and Ethernet IC solutions, today launched two new high performance, low drop-out (LDO) regulators for portable and space constrained electronics. The MIC5365 and MIC5366 extend Micrel’s ever shrinking LDO regulator products by achieving 1mm x 1mm Thin MLF(R) package size, which is a more than a 46 percent reduction when compared to the industry standard 1.2mm x 1.6mm MLF(R) package. This new 150mA Single LDO family is ideally suited for a wide range of battery-powered electronic applications including mobile phones, personal navigation devices (PND), portable media players (PMP), digital still cameras (DSC), notebook computers, personal digital assistants (PDA), and handheld instruments. The MIC5365 is currently available with pricing starting at $0.16 for 1K quantities. The MIC5366 is also currently at $0.18 for 1K quantities. Samples can be ordered on Micrel’s web site: http://www.micrel.com/ProductList.do.

“When compared to the typical 1.2mm x 1.6mm 4-lead MLF(R) package, the 1mm x 1mm 4-lead Thin MLF(R) provides portable system designers with the smallest possible footprint,” noted Andy Khayat, director of Micrel’s portable product group. “This new series of high performance LDOs also offers excellent overall performance and solid value for very high volume handheld electronics.”

The new family of single LDOs not only addresses the need for the smallest solution possible in the market but also features extensive voltage range options down to 1.0V. The MIC5365/66 provides very fast transient response to any load change and up to 70dB of PSRR for noise sensitive applications. The MIC5365/66 achieves this in spite of consuming only 29uA typical while enabled. This combination of compact integration, high performance and low power consumption makes the MIC5365/66 suitable for most applications in portable electronics. The MIC5365/66 is a uCap design operating with very small ceramic output capacitors which additionally reduces required board space. This series offers an auto discharge function in the MIC5366, full protection circuitry including current limit and thermal shutdown protection, and an operating junction temperature range of -40 degreesC to 125 degreesC.
