Indonesian Telco Excelcomindo Pratama Leverages IBM Service Management Solutions to Proactively Detect and Resolve Network Problems

Excelcomindo Pratama (Excelcomindo), Indonesia's third largest telecommunications provider, has chosen IBM (NYSE: IBM) Service Management solution to proactively detect and resolve their network problems. These solutions will enable Excelcomindo to meet the service quality needs of customers efficiently as they transform and integrate business and Information Technology processes to support their overall growth plans.
Excelcomindo has the goal of becoming the preferred information and communication technology provider throughout Indonesia, with the capability to meet customers' communications needs anytime, anywhere while delivering consistent outstanding service quality.
To achieve this goal, Excelcomindo required an integrated and comprehensive network fault and performance management system that would empower their staff to proactively detect network problems and understand the real time performance of its multi-vendor network infrastructure, including legacy and next-generation elements.
IBM's Service Management solution will allow Excelcomindo to predict important trends such as cell utilization and performance. This in turn will help Excelcomindo improve their service quality, network planning and reduce operating costs. Additionally, this will enable the company to gain a wider view of their assets and applications to improve operational efficiency and security.
"The utilization of IBM service management is relevant to Excelcomindo's project implementation as the correlation can be easily monitored," said Wira Wiguna, General Manager, NOC Operations & Maintenance, PT Excelcomindo Pratama, Tbk. "For example, if a fault occurs that affects the service and the availability of the network, corrective actions can be carried out immediately."
Having done a comprehensive review at the end of 2007, Excelcomindo decided to choose IBM over HP to support its network management initiative. The company chose the Netcool/OMNIbus and Netcool Performance Manager for wireless solutions as this application can efficiently manage multi-vendor network technologies without having to re-engineer its management system. The improved business benefit gave IBM the edge over its competitor's solutions.
"We are very proud to be the chosen information technology partner for a growing telco leader like Excelcomindo despite the challenge from competition," said Kustiawan Kusumo, Country Manager, IBM Software Group. "IBM is deeply committed to helping growing businesses like Excelcomindo realize and take advantage of the benefits of such network performance solutions. IBM's deep industry experience, gained from working with many of the leading telecommunication companies globally and end-to-end solutions, makes us a partner of choice for telcos. We look forward to continuing this collaboration with Excelcomindo to fuel their drive towards industry leadership in Indonesia," Kustiawan added.
For this project, IBM teamed with its Business Partners, Fastwire and Niaga Prima Paramita, to implement the fault and performance management system based on IBM Tivoli Netcool software. IBM Tivoli Netcool/OMNIbus detects and filters faults, and automates the isolation and resolution of problems to help staff quickly isolate, analyze and resolve network problems for improved service quality.
"Excelcomindo utilizes the IBM Netcool data and software solutions to identify the needs of its increasing number of BTS towers from 8,936 to 12,290. With the help of these solutions, this telco company owned by the TM Group from Malaysia can provide network coverage to 90 percent of Indonesia's population," said Wiguna. "The system framework, costing USD $1.5 million, begins with the event collection process, which compiles all events happening in the Element Manager System. This is followed by the consolidation and analysis process which results in a user friendly format detailing the key performance and measured quality."
