Microsoft has secured a search distribution deal with Sun Microsystems whereby Sun will distribute Microsoft's MSN Toolbar powered by Microsoft Live Search as part of its Java Runtime Environment.
This will enable Internet Explorer users downloading Sun's JRE to download the MSN Toolbar and have access to Live Search features, Windows Live Hotmail, and Windows Live Messenger. Sun has similar deals with Google and Yahoo.
Yusuf Mehdi, senior vice president of Microsoft's online audience division, said: "This agreement with Sun Microsystems is another important milestone in our strategy to secure broad-scale distribution for our search offering, enabling millions more people to experience the benefits of Live Search."
The deal is part of Microsoft's strategy to increase its share of the search market. Earlier initiatives include paying cash rebates to users in its Live Search cashback program and a search service and advertising deal with Verizon. It also has a deal with Hewlett-Packard to place the Live Search engine as the default internet browser on HP's PCs.
