Motorola, its local partner Magic Telekom and European distributor AIR are collaborating with the city of Varazdin, Croatia, to develop a municipal wireless broadband network for the use of the city’s employees, businesses, residents and visitors.

According to Motorola, the project heralds the first deployment of its Motomesh Duo network in Europe, Middle East and Africa. This dual radio meshed Wi-Fi network enables users to access wireless broadband applications across the city and reduces backhaul costs.

It is claimed that, till now nearly 45 units have been installed in the city, covering an area of approximately one square kilometer. A number of wireless applications are already being piloted on the network, including remote monitoring of traffic, street lighting and parking using video surveillance technology. Based on anticipated demand for broadband access, an additional 50 Motomesh Duo units will be installed during 2009.

Stanko Magic, CEO at Magic Telekom, said: “The decision to choose Motomesh Duo technology gives Varazdin an affordable, highly reliable and scalable networking solution.”
