New iPhone Upgrade To Counter Storm

Posted on: Friday, 21 November 2008, 13:27 CST

Just hours ahead of the highly anticipated released of the BlackBerry Storm, Apple launched a new software upgrade for their popular iPhones.

Apple fans were caught by surprise as the update appeared on Friday when they connected their iPhones to iTunes 8 and found the 2.2 software waiting for them.

The new software improvements are hoped to decrease in call set-up failures and dropped calls; significantly better battery life; reduced time to back up iTunes; better e-mail reliability; faster installation of third party applications; and a fix for bugs that causes applications to crash.

The Safari application on the iPhone has also been improved with a new search friendly user interface, better performance and more stability.

The iPhone update also lets users have access to millions of free podcasts on the iTunes Store via Wi-Fi or cell network.

The Maps feature has been changed, and includes a Google Street View, which lets users take a virtual walking tour by navigating through street level pictures of areas that have been located through Maps.  It also now gives directions when navigating through a street by walking, with an added button that send your location in emails for others to find you.

The last software upgrade was in September when it was announced by CEO Steve Jobs at the "Let's Rock" event.
