Network Strategy Partners Study Analyzes the TCO of Ethernet Transport vs. VPLS and MPLS in the Metro Network
Posted on: Tuesday, 2 December 2008, 11:00 CST
According to the study (Total Cost of Ownership Comparison: Ethernet Transport vs. VPLS and MPLS in the Metro Network), the Ethernet Transport architecture, featuring the Extreme Networks' BlackDiamond 20808 Ethernet Transport Switch, provides the lowest total cost of ownership (TCO) for service provider metro network architectures with converged triple-play aggregation, Ethernet mobile backhaul, and enterprise carrier Ethernet services.
"The substantial cost advantage of Ethernet Transport over VPLS and MPLS
results from savings in both initial capital expenditures as well as long-term
operational expenditures," said
Study Highlights
The study uses a model metro network that consists of three large Central Offices, four medium Central Offices and three small Central Offices that offer Triple Play services to residential households, Carrier Ethernet services to enterprises and Carrier Ethernet services used for backhaul to mobile wireless operators.
The analysis shows that Ethernet Transport has lower TCO than the VPLS and MPLS alternatives over a five-year study period. Specifically,
-- Ethernet Transport has 61% lower TCO than a VPLS architecture -- Ethernet Transport has 57% lower TCO than a MPLS architecture See "Whitepapers" at www.nspllc.com to download the study.
