Technology Quickly Changing Says Pew Survey

Posted on: Tuesday, 16 December 2008, 08:38 CST

A Pew Internet and American Life Project survey of more than 1,000 journalists, technology experts, and Internet activists showed that many believe items like keyboards and laptops will be obsolete by 2012.

Lee Rainie and other Pew researchers asked survey respondents to answer questions about future scenarios in the year 2020.

The results showed that many believe the mobile phone will be the primary Internet connection and that copy protection will decline.

One consensus among respondents was that "few lines divide professional time from personal time,” making work and play integrated.

Another consensus is that keyboards will soon be replaced with touch and talk interfaces, replacing today’s keyboard.

"The big problem with the cell phone is the (user interface), particularly on the data side. We are waiting for a breakthrough," said Hal Varian, Google’s chief economist and survey respondent.

The full report can be read on the Pew Internet website (www.pewinternet.org).

The Pew survey reports that the many \'experts\' believe that keyboards will be obsolete in the near future. Only because Microsoft is pushing their touch screen technology. There are many minuses and very few positives with the use of a touch screen. Do you like cleaning your house or car windows every day? Well you will be doing it to your monitor or touch screen input device because of the oils and dirt on your fingers not to mention the ensuing scratches that will appear over time. To use a touch screen requires that you be within arms reach of the screen. That may have been okay in the days of the 13\" and 15\" monitors but with today\'s monitors being 19\" and larger, being within arms reach will most certainly cause eye and vision problems. Microsoft pushes out it\'s dreamed up technology that is always heralded by the puppets of the press as the best and greatest when in fact the technology usually turns out to be a 1/2 baked idea that is not in the best interest of the consumer. It is more in the best interest of Microsoft and the PC manufacturers by way of the consumer\'s pocket book. TaZMAn http://tazbuntu.blogspot.com/
