The number of travelers passing through New York's three major airports each year is racing toward the 100 million mark, leading the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to consider whether it is time for a fourth regional airport, according to officials.
The port authority, which operates La Guardia, Kennedy and Newark airports, expects its traveler traffic will rise more than 6 percent this year, William DeCota, the agency's director of aviation, said Thursday. In the next 10 years, the number of passengers is expected to grow to 124 million.
The authority's chairman, Anthony Coscia, said studies must be done to determine the airport's location. Until then, "I think it's actually irresponsible of me to say where we're going to put this airport," he said.
