Motorola Shows Off Phone Made From Water Bottles

Posted on: Wednesday, 7 January 2009, 11:05 CST

Motorola on Tuesday revealed the newest member of its mobile phone line up – a cell phone made from recycled plastic water bottles.

The Schaumburg, Illinois-based firm unveiled the Moto W233 Renew during the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, calling it the "world's first carbon neutral mobile phone."

The phone’s production uses about 20 percent less energy than traditional phone plastic production processes, Motorola said.

In fact, the phone itself is quite an energy conserver, as it provides users with up to nine hours of talk time. The green gadget has a 128 X 128 pixel screen (1.6 inches) and can take up to 2GB microSD memory cards.

Motorola also said the phone will come in a box that has been reduced in size along with owner’s manuals printed using vegetable-based ink on 100 percent post-consumer recycled paper.

The company has yet to provide pricing information, availability or carriers for the W233 Renew.

Motorola will also unveil its Motosurf A3100 at CES. The touch tablet phone provides Wi-Fi capabilities and high-speed cellular connections. The device comes with a 2.8 inch touchscreen and Windows Mobile 6.1 for video-conferencing capabilities. Motorola said it will be available in Asia and Latin America during the first quarter.

Motorola has lost market share in the past by being slow to follow trends such as touchscreens and high-speed data links.

The company also showed off its newest flip phone, the Motorola Tundra VA76r, that provides push-to-talk capabilities. AT&T will provide coverage for the device.

The firm also plans to release a rechargeable cable TV remote control that uses a docking station for charging and also provides users with a find feature in case it goes missing.
